Even drain cleaning pros need a little break every now and then. How will you enjoy your Labor Day weekend this year?

Always the first Monday in September, Labor Day was the idea of Peter J. Maguire (although recent research has shown that it might have been his brother Matthew’s idea). Maguire was a labor union leader who in 1882 proposed a celebration honoring the American worker.

The date chosen was simply convenient, according to Maguire, because it was midway between the Fourth of July and Thanksgiving.

Although the day’s focus on organized labor has diminished over the years, the holiday has become a way to mark the end of the summer season — and the start of the school year.

Labor Day Recipe
Traditionally, Labor Day consists of barbecues and time together with family. As you plan your Labor Day festivities you might consider this award-winning recipe from the Old Farmer’s Almanac. It was created by John Collins, of Yakima, Washington, and won first prize in 1998.

Fried Chicken

Ingredients:

1 fryer, cut up
1/4 cup honey
1/2 cup undiluted orange juice
1/2 cup water
1 cup flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/2 cup fine dry bread crumbs
1/2 cup ground almonds

Instructions:
Mix honey with orange juice and water. In separate bowl, combine flour, salt, and pepper. Place breadcrumbs in a third bowl, and almonds in a fourth. Dip chicken pieces first in flour to coat them thoroughly, then dip into juice mixture. Then roll in crumbs to coat thoroughly, dip a second time into juice, and roll in ground almonds. Fry in 1 inch of clear oil at 360 degrees F, until crisp and cooked through. Serves 4 to 6.

You work hard, enjoy a day off. But be prepared for calls on Tuesday to clear grease clogs from others who enjoyed the recipe. Make sure you’re ready with one of General’s water jets.

We at General Pipe Cleaners wish you all a safe and relaxing Labor Day weekend!
