Frankie Balderama and his pink, 1997 Chevrolet Astro van took top honors in the 2015 Plumbers Alert Truck of the Year contest.

Beginning in November, members of the Facebook group competed for braggin’ by posting a picture of their truck. The winner was decided by the most number of “Likes.” Only Plumbers Alert members could participate and only members could vote in the two-week contest coordinated by site administrator Chuck Thompson.

“We know what it’s like to be in the truck day in and day out – it’s like a second home,” he says. “We take pride in how it looks and runs. I’m excited to see my members’ trucks get even more recognition.”

Frankie Balderama and Family

Balderama, owner and founder of A-Team Drain & Plumbing in Savannah, Georgia, is a fully licensed, 17-year veteran of the plumbing business. A member of the UA Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Union and a “Chevy man,” Balderama says he chose the Astro van because of its dependability.

“Plus, I started my company on my own – no financial help of loans – so I couldn’t afford a nicer van. Lol, that’s the truth of it.”

His company’s “I Pity the Stool” tagline is a takeoff of the “I pity the fool” trademark rant by the Mr. T character on the A-Team TV action-adventure series that ran from 1983 through 1987.

Remembering the A-Team

As for the pink truck, Balderam says it helps make his company unique and brings awareness to the fight against breast cancer.

“I don’t mind sacrificing my manhood and pride to bring attention to such a great cause,” he says. “Women love pink and won’t forget a pink plumbing van, especially one that made them chuckle.”

Runners-up in the Truck of the Year contest were Lucien Rizio of I.R.C Plumbing in Sebastian, Florida; Joel Tucciarone of The Plumber and 72 Degree Air Conditioning & Heating in Tonawanda, New York; Ryan Yarborough of Genesis Plumbing in Rowlett, Texas; and retired master plumber Jonathan Gott of Gott Plumbing and Repair, owned by his wife, Rauni, in Glasgow, Kentucky.

“Here’s one of our trucks,” Gott says. “It’s an ’04 GMC Savana 3500 with a 10-foot box. They are ex-U-Haul fleet trucks. We have four lettered just like this.”
