What were your choices for the best new kitchen and bath fixtures of 2015? Was it a 358-spray nozzle showerhead, a free-standing bath or stainless copper sink?

What trends in style, color and technology caught your eye?

Kate Bailey, director of showrooms, Ferguson Enterprises, says home automation was the biggest trend impacting the kitchen and bath industry in 2015.

“As more builders, contractors and designers are working on projects with a diverse, technologically savvy client base, they are requesting products that accommodate their customers’ need for customization, integration and automation,” she says. “Therefore, we’ve seen a lot of manufacturers respond to that need by creating products that allow for individual personalization via technology and integration of the smart home.”

Bailey says today’s buyer has more influence on product design and functionality than ever before.

“With personalization, the design is really about providing a variety of options and features to meet the customers’ needs,” she says. “Faucets with hands-free and touch functionality have been the most widely accepted products with technology integration, as they are less intimidating and easily integrated into an existing space. We are seeing a trend of products moving towards complete automation, as their functionality can be controlled from a mobile device.”

Digital showering and customized showering were two big trends in 2015 that Bailey expects will continue in 2016.

“Manufacturers such as Delta and Kohler are creating a wide variety of products that allow you to customize key details, like the customizable faucet handles from Kallista,” she says.

Other trends for 2015 included gold finish for plumbing fixtures and faucets, along with the continued popularity of free-standing tubs.

“However, the styling moved away from claw-foot tubs and is now more modern, showcasing a geometric shape,” she says.

Ferguson predicts Coastal, Basketweave, Medieval Mystery and Black & Gold pairings will be the design trends of 2016.
