Amanda Swanson, 18, and Raha Kambale, 20, are participating in a six-week apprenticeship with Bill Howe Plumbing of San Diego, California. Although not the first female field employee at Bill Howe, Swanson is the first female Job Corps student to train with the company’s San Diego plumbers.

San Diego Job Corps is part of the National Job Corps Organization. Locally, the Job Corps program offers students the skills necessary to succeed in a myriad of career paths. Bill Howe has been involved with the San Diego Job Corps for over 10 years through mentorship programs, apprenticeships and the opportunity for Job Corps students to ride along with San Diego plumbers through their shadow program.

Students learn all aspects of the trade from customer service, on-the-job training, plumbing and safety skills, as well as a broad picture of daily life as a plumber.

Since first connecting with San Diego Job Corps, Bill Howe has had hundreds of students pass through the company. Additionally, Bill Howe has hired several students for full-time positions. Currently, four former Job Corps students work for the plumbing company, one for the restoration division and one in the HVAC department.

“We are proud to welcome Job Corps students to the Bill Howe Family of Companies,” says Tina Howe, vice president. “They are hard working, eager to learn, and are another step in elevating our great industry.”

PHCC/Delta Apprentice of the Year

Brandon Pettway was named PHCC/Delta Apprentice of the Year at PHCC Connect 2015 in Hollywood, Florida. Pettway has been a Bill Howe San Diego plumber since 2014. Nominated by the San Diego Chapter of the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling-Contractors Association, Pettway is a fourth-year PHCC Academy student.

“We are beyond proud of Brandon,” says Bill Howe, president of Bill Howe Plumbing, Heating & Air. “He deserves the recognition of Apprentice of the Year and we expect great things from him. We want to ensure all of our employees have the same opportunity and become journeyman plumbers, and continue to take care of our customers the Bill Howe Way!”

The San Diego PHCC Apprenticeship Program is federally recognized by the Department of Labor. Students spend 156 hours of classroom instruction per year and receive on-the-job training working for licensed contractor members. Since the PHCC Academy began, Bill Howe Plumbing has graduated over 15 students and currently has 27 enrolled in plumbing and HVAC courses.
