Press fittings have proven to be faster to install than other methods, such as soldering or welding. They also require less training and preparation, and can be used in confined spaces because they don’t require open flames. However, until now, they didn’t allow plumbers to join pipes made from different materials.
Now MegaPress Transition Couplings from Viega that can be used to transition between galvanized or carbon steel pipe and copper, PEX or stainless steel in seconds. The couplings are available in 1/2- to 2-inch sizes.
“This is the first press fitting Viega has developed from its zero-lead bronze material that is engineered to connect carbon, galvanized, or stainless steel pipe,” says Will Schneider, product manager at Viega. “This innovation changes the way plumbers and contractors can transition between metal piping while reducing the risk of galvanic corrosion. The MegaPress Bronze Transition Coupling is now the fastest, easiest and safest way to upgrade galvanized piping for potable water to copper, PEX or stainless tubing and piping.”
All of the couplings are made of zero-lead bronze that can be used to connect dissimilar metals while reducing the risk of galvanic corrosion. They also feature Smart Connect technology to quickly detect and resolve unpressed connections. The couplings with EPDM sealing elements carry an NSF-61 rating for potable water.
“Customers have been asking us for this type of product that uses press technology,” says Schneider. “Up until now, transitioning from one type of pipe to another has been challenging and time-consuming with the use of cumbersome traditional joining methods. Now, our customers have a quick and secure option to connect dissimilar materials.”
The primary application is to transition piping systems for potable water. According to Schneider, holding the NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 – 372 listing allows models with EPDM seals to connect potable water piping, but these fittings can also be used for a variety of other media, including compressed air, industrial gasses, hydronics and vacuum.
“These transition couplings allow our residential customers to easily retrofit homes with old galvanized potable waterlines," says Schneider. “This particular product went through substantial engineering innovations to meet the highest quality and performance standards that Viega maintains for the MegaPress systems. Even though Viega has used zero-lead bronze for years in producing other fitting and valve systems, this is the first innovation for the IPS piping systems. This is a game-changer.”
