Have you taken time for yourself yet this year? We’re already at the halfway point of 2022 and it has probably been a busy first half of the year — getting jobs lined up and completed, making sure your customers are happy, keeping tabs on the business side of things, too.

In the midst of all this busyness, you do need to find some time for yourself. I know, you’re already groaning and saying one of these: “I don’t have anyone that can fill in for me. It’s too busy for me to take off. I’m good, I don’t need the time off.” Am I right?

Let’s hit on each of those points and see where you might be wrong.

I DON’T HAVE ANYONE TO FILL IN FOR ME

Yes, this could be a little bit of a problem, but it’s a fixable one. You may not be able to take the time off for yourself right now, but you should consider training someone to handle some of your work when you are gone.

If not for vacation reason, then think of emergencies that could pop up, or if you are sick. You need someone that can take on some of that work if it requires.

If that isn’t possible, then instead of scheduling a whole week of vacation, try just one day here and there. Maybe take a random Monday or Friday and extend that two-day weekend to a three-day. Being gone one day won’t make or break a company. That extra day could be enough to recharge your batteries for a little while.

IT’S TOO BUSY FOR ME TO TAKE OFF

Everyone says that they are too busy to take time off, but I bet there are ways you can adjust your schedule to take a day off here and there. Maybe push off some of those non-emergency calls to the next day or when scheduling jobs, make sure you avoid one or two days that you know you would like to take off.

I know it’s hard to step away for even a day when it’s so busy, but if you don’t, the quality of work you are doing can suffer. Do you really want that for your customers?

Also, if it is that busy, it’s time to find another plumbing technician or an office staff member to help with the work.

I’M GOOD, I DON’T NEED THE TIME OFF

Yeah, you really do need the time off. If you get burned out, it will start to affect your personal and work life. As I stated above, it will affect your quality of work, customers will notice and you could lose them.

If you’re not taking the time off, you’re missing that valuable time with your family and friends. Work is important, but it should not consume your entire life. A little bit of time away from the office will be very beneficial.

With that time off, you’ll come back refreshed and ready to tackle more jobs and, maybe, in a more productive way now that your batteries are recharged.

Get that technician or office member trained on some of the stuff you do so you can take some time for yourself. Your company will be better with you doing that in the long run.
