As I’m writing this column today, it’s pretty frigid here in Northern Wisconsin, but I know warmer temperatures are soon on their way, and that means your schedule as plumbers will likely start getting busier.

Summer often brings a surge in demand, from outdoor plumbing projects to emergency repairs that can’t wait. Taking a proactive approach this spring can set you up for a smooth, profitable and less stressful season.

SPRING CLEANING

Just as homeowners use spring as a time to declutter and organize, plumbers should do the same for their businesses. Start by taking stock of your inventory. Do you have enough essential supplies, or are there tools that need replacement? Check that your truck or van is clean, well-organized, and fully equipped to handle a wide variety of jobs. A well-stocked and orderly vehicle saves time and projects professionalism to your clients.

Next, review your administrative systems. Update customer records, reconcile outstanding invoices and evaluate your scheduling process. If you’re still relying on manual methods, consider investing in plumbing management software to streamline scheduling, billing and customer communication.

Efficiency behind the scenes can make a world of difference during the summer rush.

MAINTAINING THE TOOLS

Your tools are the backbone of your trade. Inspect them for wear and tear, and ensure they’re in top working condition. Pay special attention to power tools, drain cleaning machines and pipe inspection cameras. Proper maintenance now can prevent costly downtime later.

Spring is also a great time to invest in new tools or upgrade your equipment.

With advances in technology, there are always innovative products hitting the market that can improve efficiency and safety. Evaluate your needs and consider making strategic purchases that can help you stay ahead of the competition.

MARKET YOUR SERVICES

Spring is the perfect time to ramp up your marketing efforts. Many homeowners tackle renovation projects or prepare their properties for summer, which often involves plumbing work. Use social media, email newsletters and your website to promote seasonal services like outdoor faucet installation, irrigation system checks or water heater maintenance.

Additionally, offer a spring plumbing checkup package. This could include inspecting pipes for winter damage, checking sump pumps and ensuring outdoor plumbing is ready for increased use. Bundled services can attract customers who might not otherwise think to call a plumber.

PRIORITIZE TRAINING

Finally, use the relatively quieter spring months to invest in training. Whether it’s learning about the latest plumbing codes, honing customer service skills or training apprentices, this is the time to ensure your team is well-prepared. A skilled and knowledgeable crew can handle a wider range of jobs and leave customers more satisfied.

By taking these proactive steps, you can position your plumbing business for a successful summer season. Not only will you be better equipped to handle the increased workload, but you’ll also enhance your reputation for professionalism, reliability and quality service. Here’s to a productive and prosperous spring and summer ahead!
