Digital mixing valves are a proven money-saver. By mixing hot and cold water on demand, less hot water is used when a faucet or appliance is turned on. That means your water heater doesn’t need to run as often, significantly cutting residential hot water costs. Armstrong International recently introduced Ascend — the company’s high-efficiency, on-demand, gas-fired water heater with a fully integrated digital mixing valve.
This single footprint, tankless hot water generation and water temperature control solution is compliant with ASSE 1017, consumes less fossil fuel, reduces risks for scalding and waterborne pathogens (such as Legionella), and ensures precise +/- 2 degrees F water temperature control. It heats water to temperatures above 140 degrees F and distributes to points of use at a consistent, user-safe temperature using the Brain Digital Recirculation Valve, Armstrong’s precision water temperature control technology. The water heater works seamlessly with Armstrong’s advanced hot-water system management platform, SAGE, for compliance with a Standard of Care such as ASHRAE 188 and VA 1061.
“The water-heating market is being disrupted by a desire for net-zero buildings, and we see natural gas as a transitional technology,” says Kurt Armstrong, CEO of Armstrong International. “In response to the net-zero movement, industries like hospitality and higher education have long preferred high-efficiency gas-fired condensing technology. Although many municipalities no longer allow equipment that burns fossil fuels to be installed in new construction, many do still lack the necessary infrastructure to support total electrification.”
Additionally, with mechanical room space at a premium, electric water heaters need large storage tanks to keep up with peak system demand due to their slow recovery. Large storage tanks have been identified as incubation points for Legionella pneumophila that can lead to Legionellosis. Ascend addresses these challenges and in the longer term can not only be integrated with a heat pump, but also be upgraded to work with hydrogen and/or biogas. Systems are offered in 800 Btu, 1 MBtu and 1.5 MBtu.
“Our intelligent solutions are hard at work, saving time, money and energy for some of the largest, most efficient companies around the world,” says Armstrong. “We are delighted to offer an exceptional product like Ascend for both new and existing customers.”
