Trenchless solution sought for underground air duct system
Problem: An upscale Laguna Beach oceanfront home was experiencing severe infiltration in its underground air duct system. Shifting ground near the Pacific stressed the buried ductwork connection joints, allowing moisture and sand to intrude. The general contractor sought a trenchless solution as traditional replacement would have required demolishing the concrete slab, causing major interior disruption and taking months to complete.
Solution: Flow-Liner’s CIP-Duct HVAC lining system was chosen for the trenchless rehabilitation. Ambient-cure liners were installed overnight to restore the ducts without demolition. The scope included two 18-inch ducts at approximately 90 feet each, one 16-inch duct at 60 feet, one 14-inch duct at 60 feet and two 12-inch ducts at approximately 90 feet and 60 feet. The liners navigated multiple 45-degree bends and 90-degree turns without issue, and no reinstatements were required.
Result: The project was completed in just two weeks with no damage to the home’s slab, flooring or utilities — and no concrete dust from demolition tools. The contractor praised the Flow-Liner Certified Installers for their professionalism, attention to detail and teamwork. 800-348-0020; www.flow-liner.com
Contractor delivers comfort, savings with hybrid heat pump system
Problem: A homeowner in the Chicagoland area wanted to improve energy efficiency and lower propane heating costs. The home featured an existing hydronic radiant floor heating system, as well as a snowmelt system for the driveway and sidewalk, which were powered by a propane-fired high-efficiency Weil-McLain boiler.
Solution: Contractor James Downs of JMD Associates recommended the ECO Hybrid Dual Fuel Hydronic System from Weil-McLain. The system combines an air-to-water heat pump with a high-efficiency gas boiler to deliver optimal performance and flexibility across a wide range of temperatures. Downs described the property as an ideal candidate for a hybrid installation due to its low-temperature heating setup and the homeowner’s desire for greater sustainability and cost control. “With radiant floor heating already in place in the home and the climate conditions in the Chicagoland area, this was a great opportunity for a hybrid setup,” says Downs. “The heat pump is designed to handle most of the heating season efficiently, and the boiler only kicks in when needed — striking a smart balance between performance and comfort.”
Result: Downs reported approximately $600 in propane savings in the first season alone. “The propane deliveries noticeably dropped,” he says. “That, combined with stable indoor temperatures and quieter operation, made it a win for the homeowner.” Comfort remained consistent with no cold spots. Domestic hot water is stored at 140 degrees F and tempered with a mixing valve for safe delivery, providing reliable service even during peak use. 800-654-2109; www.weil-mclain.com
