Dwyer Group has reacquired the master franchise license for Drain Doctor in the U.K. The acquisition is the latest in a series of purchases by Dwyer Group, emphasizing the company’s growing interest in direct franchising on an international level. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“This is a momentous day for the international strength and commitment we are making to support and grow our most successful franchise network abroad,” says Mike Bidwell, president and CEO of Dwyer Group.

The equivalent brand to Dwyer Group’s Mr. Rooter system in North America, Drain Doctor was established by Freddie and Jan Mitman in 1993 and has grown to become the largest combined plumbing and draining company in the U.K. with 80 locations.

The Mitmans, who were attracted to the accomplishments of Dwyer Group service brands in the U.S., looked to franchising as a way to help people grow their own businesses when they purchased the master license and introduced Drain Doctor in the U.K. Today, after 22 years of growth, Drain Doctor has become a reputable and respected name in the region as the Mitmans look towards retirement and Dwyer Group continues to guide the brand forward.

“We wanted franchisees to have leadership that fully understood the franchising business model and could help them grow further,” says Freddie Mitman. “Dwyer Group, the original founder of the systems that have made Drain Doctor so successful, seemed to be the most obvious choice to be entrusted with that future growth.”

“We are extremely happy that Dwyer Group has taken up the challenge of building the Drain Doctor network still further,” says Jan Mitman. “Their track record proves that they will be the ideal leaders for the task ahead. Drain Doctor will, so to speak, stay in the family.”

HammerHead Trenchless names president

Charles Machine Works appointed Kevin Smith  president of HammerHead Trenchless Equipment. He had been serving as president of MTI Equipment, a Charles Machine Works company – as is Ditch Witch, where Smith worked as director of product definition and research, product planning manager, business manager and salesman.

“Kevin’s incisive vision comes directly from his solid industry background working with leading manufacturers within the Charles Machine Works family of companies,” says Rick Johnson, CEO of Charles Machine Works and interim HammerHead president during the selection process. “This means he knows every aspect of the business from multiple angles. He not only sees where HammerHead Trenchless Equipment can go but how to get there.”

Tiffany Sewell-Howard, Executive Chair for Charles Machine Works, says, “Throughout his admirable career, Kevin has been an integral part in achieving the goal shared by our family of companies: ensure our customers success by providing the most complete solutions for the installation, replacement, and maintenance of underground utility pipe and cable.”

Smith says he looks forward to continuing the legacy of HammerHead Trenchless Equipment.

“I strongly believe that our strategic alliances with global industry leaders and our close relationship with our sister companies Ditch Witch, Subsite Electronics, DW/TXS, Radius HDD, American Augers, Trencor and MTI Equipment, will continue to assure the success of our customers,” he says. “This is an exciting time to take this position, having seen the new, next-generation solutions being launched, with more soon to be released.”
