At first glance, plumbing and bowling leagues might seem like an odd pair to compare. One conjures images of wrenches, pipes and fixing leaks, while the other brings to mind strikes, spares and night gatherings with friends.

If we look beyond the surface though, there are striking similarities between the plumbing industry and bowling leagues. Both require skill, patience, teamwork and a surprising amount of strategy.

PRECISION AND SKILL

In bowling, every movement is intentional. A successful bowler must consider their stance, the weight of the ball, the angle of their approach and the rotation applied. Any small misstep can throw off their game.

The same goes for plumbers. Working with precision is critical when installing or repairing plumbing systems. Whether it’s measuring and cutting pipes, aligning fittings or ensuring that connections are watertight, small errors can have big consequences. Both activities demand steady hands, technical knowledge and focus to achieve success.

Just like bowlers fine-tune their form over years of practice, plumbers sharpen their skills over time. Plumbing is a trade that often takes years of experience, licensing and ongoing education to master. From understanding new technology like smart water heaters to navigating complex plumbing codes, there’s a constant evolution in both industries. A seasoned plumber, much like an experienced bowler, can spot potential issues or opportunities for improvement with just a glance.

PROBLEM-SOLVING AND STRATEGY

A game of bowling isn’t just about hurling a ball down the lane — it’s about anticipating challenges, adjusting strategies and improving with each frame. Bowlers analyze their game after every throw, correcting their form or adjusting their positioning to avoid mistakes. Similarly, plumbers face unique problems every day. Whether it’s diagnosing a mysterious leak, dealing with outdated infrastructure or designing an efficient new system, plumbers must be adaptable and strategic problem-solvers.

Each plumbing job is like a bowling lane with its own set of pins to knock down. Just as bowlers must adjust their strategy for each frame, plumbers must adapt to the specific requirements of each project, whether it’s commercial or residential work, dealing with high-rise buildings or small homes.

TEAMWORK AND COMMUNITY

Bowling leagues are known for their sense of camaraderie. Although individuals play their own games, teams support one another, offering tips, encouragement and constructive feedback. The plumbing industry too is built on a foundation of teamwork and collaboration. Whether it’s a team of plumbers working together on a large construction project or an individual contractor leaning on a network of suppliers, manufacturers or fellow plumbers for advice, no one in the industry works entirely alone.

The plumbing community often fosters a sense of belonging as well. Professional organizations, local unions and trade shows serve as forums for networking, sharing knowledge and helping fellow professionals.

These interactions can be as critical to success in plumbing as they are to a bowling team striving for a league championship. Strong relationships within the industry not only make day-to-day work easier, but also ensure that the latest innovations and best practices are shared for the benefit of all.

KNOCKING ’EM DOWN

The next time you’re troubleshooting a tricky plumbing job, think of it like the 7-10 split in bowling: With the right approach, persistence and maybe a little luck, you can always find a way to knock those pins — or problems — down.
