NASSCO, a longtime leader in sewer inspection training and certifications, is working on other educational offerings for contractors.
This week at the WWETT Show in Indianapolis, NASSCO representatives promoted and shared details about its latest certification program, Building Sewer and Drain Inspection, as well as a drain cleaning certification that will be rolled out by year’s end.
David Hamberlin, business development manager of water/wastewater solutions at Hydromax USA, says the drain cleaning certification has been in the works for about four years and is nearly ready. The book for the program is finished, and now slides are being prepared for the virtual training component. It will be a program that participants can complete at their own pace, in about four hours total. Hamberlin says developing these certification programs takes time since, apart from some staff positions, NASSCO is made up of people like himself who are volunteers and have other responsibilities to balance.
Hamberlin says the drain cleaning certification began with a plumber reaching out, noting that there was nothing available for drain cleaners to showcase their expertise and differentiate themselves from the Average Joe with a cable machine.
“A certification helps the industry move forward,” Hamberlin says. “It provides a professional standard and helps develop customer trust.
“This course will be a thorough introduction to drain cleaning processes and procedures, as well as descriptions of different types of sewers and standard safety processes. Orientation was our thought process on it. Something that you can have a new employee go through on Day 1. I also see this as good continuing education for employees, something to help prevent the complacent employee.”
Hamberlin says after the drain cleaning certification launch, a mainline cleaning program will be the next certification for NASSCO to work on.
