When Dan Beck, co-owner of Moody’s Diner in Waldoboro, Maine, completed a state-sponsored energy audit, he realized that the business could save on fuel costs by replacing the existing oil-fired boiler with a high-efficiency gas condensing boiler.

Beck’s maintenance supervisor, who oversees the workings of the 86-year-old diner, had accomplished the same conversion — oil to gas — in his own home. He consulted with Beck about installing a Buderus GB162 from Bosch Thermotechnology Corp.

The GB162 has an aluminum silicate ALU-Plus heat exchanger to provide up to 96 percent efficiency, and its energy management system allows it to stay in condensing mode for optimal heating efficiency. The compact, lightweight unit is ideal for smaller commercial buildings and large residences, and can be cascaded up to four units, as needed. It can be wall-mounted and vented with PVC pipe through a wall or roof.

Beck has projected the diner’s annual fuel savings to be up to $9,000 based on his current oil cost versus a negotiated price for LP gas. Combined with the boiler’s higher efficiency, he foresees system payback in 2 1/2 years. “We are anticipating significant fuel savings in the coming years thanks to Buderus,” he says. 800/283-3787;
