Scientific studies have shown links between exposure to PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) and adverse health outcomes in both humans and animals. These health risks include an increased risk of cancer, including kidney and testicular cancer; hormone disruption and effects on the endocrine system; liver damage and high cholesterol; immune system suppression, including a decreased response to vaccines in children; high blood pressure or pre-eclampsia in pregnant women; and developmental effects in children, including small decreases in infant birth weights.
To combat the issue, Watts has launched its Single-Stage Total PFAS Reduction Filtration System. Designed for easy connection to most existing kitchen and bathroom faucets, this system offers plumbing contractors a practical way to meet growing customer demand for reliable water filtration.
“PFAS, as you know, are known as ‘forever chemicals,’ meaning they don’t break down naturally,” says John Imming, product specialist - pure water at Watts Water Technologies. “So we have a solution to help prevent them from entering into our drinking water, providing safe, good tasting water.”
Unlike many filters that target only PFOA and PFOS, this advanced system is certified to reduce 99.5% of total PFAS — a broader category of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. “This system is certified through IMO to the NSF standards,” says Imming. “It is also certified to reduce microplastics, lead, cysts, chlorine taste and odor, as well as particulates.” In addition to PFAS, the system also reduces asbestos, offering comprehensive protection in a compact, easy-to-install design.
The Watts Single-Stage Total PFAS Reduction Filtration System offers a high-flow rate of 2.5 gpm and a high-capacity 0.5-micron carbon block filter rated for 3,200 gallons. The cartridge is designed for simple replacement every six months, and the system’s user-friendly design eliminates the need for a separate faucet during installation. Additionally, the system’s replacement cartridge is compatible with Watts’ existing Single-Stage Lead Reduction System, allowing current users to upgrade to Total PFAS protection without changing the entire unit.
“This system comes complete with all the fittings, tubing and connectors you need,” says Imming. “It has a 3/8-inch quick connect port on it, and is designed for replacement every six months.”
