Artificial Intelligence is transforming industries everywhere, and the trades are no exception.
While the idea of robots replacing skilled workers may make headlines, the reality is much more nuanced. Although some may be concerned that AI is here to take over the trades, I have found AI is like any other new development, very effective if used correctly. It can be a powerful tool that can help your business thrive in a rapidly changing industry.
HOW AI IS ALREADY HELPING THE TRADES
One of the most practical ways AI is making a difference in the trades is through optimization.
For example, tools like ServiceTitan leverage AI to help plumbing companies schedule service calls, route technicians more efficiently and analyze customer data. These platforms reduce wasted time and improve profitability by making operations smoother.
A large number of third-party companies are offering integrations with ServiceTitan that can help your team with everything from scheduling to real-time diagnostics to coaching and even sales. One example is Blue Boost, which helps bridge the gap between “tech-speak” and layman terms by populating estimates based on technical input in a way that is customer friendly. “AI is entering every other industry in the world, so why aren’t we looking for ways to integrate it for our office employees and field techs?” asks Manny Jimenez, CEO of Blue Boost.
Inventory management is another area where AI shines. Vendor managed inventory systems can use AI algorithms to predict which materials or parts you’ll need and when, ensuring that you’re never caught without critical items. This proactive approach minimizes downtime and keeps projects on track.
AI-powered chatbots and customer service platforms are also becoming commonplace. These tools allow customers to book appointments, ask questions and even get preliminary troubleshooting assistance 24/7. By handling routine inquiries, AI frees up your office staff to focus on more complex tasks.
Other tools, such as Google Lens, can help more quickly identify parts and increase productivity in the field which helps to serve more customers.
PROS OF AI IN THE TRADES
- Increased Efficiency: By automating repetitive tasks, AI gives tradespeople more time to focus on their core work
- Better Decision-Making: Data analysis tools can identify trends, predict maintenance needs and help you make informed business decisions
- Enhanced Customer Experience: AI tools can personalize interactions and respond quickly to customer needs, boosting satisfaction
CONS AND CHALLENGES
- Cost: Implementing AI tools can be expensive, particularly for smaller businesses
- Learning Curve: Adopting new technology often requires time and training, which can disrupt workflows
- Over-Reliance on Tech: While AI is a powerful tool, it’s not foolproof. Businesses must ensure they have the human expertise to back it up.
WHY THE TRADES CAN’T BE REPLACED
Despite all its benefits, AI has clear limitations in the trades. Fixing a plumbing issue, installing HVAC systems or running electrical wiring requires hands-on expertise, problem-solving and physical labor — skills that no algorithm can replicate.
What AI can do is make tradespeople’s lives easier by taking care of repetitive tasks, optimizing workflows and providing data-driven insights. In this way, it becomes a partner, not a replacement. It can free up you and your employees so they can focus on the most impactful type of work that only they can do.
THE PATH FORWARD
As AI continues to evolve, tradespeople and business owners must approach it with an open but cautious mindset. Investing in the right tools, training employees to use them effectively, and maintaining a strong foundation of human expertise will ensure that AI becomes an asset, not a threat. Also knowing when to drop something if it is not working. If the AI or software is not there yet, don’t force it. Not every new innovation is right for your company - you need to have a conversation with your team about the pros and cons and not only be willing to try something new but also to pivot away from it if it’s not the right fit.
Brandon Bart, co-founder and CEO CEO of PlumBuddy, had this to say:
“AI often feels like a buzzword, carrying negative connotations and fears of disruption. But instead of seeing it as a half-empty glass, I see it as an opportunity to fill it even more. With AI and machine learning, we are not replacing expertise. We are empowering it.”
By embracing this technology thoughtfully, the trades can leverage AI to grow their businesses, improve customer experiences and futureproof their operations. We’ve already seen this with innovative industry leaders such as ServiceTitan. The key is to see AI not as a competitor but as a collaborator in the journey toward success.
