Sand filter technology used to replace veteran’s failed system

Problem: A disabled veteran in Manhattan, Kansas, needed a replacement for a failed system at his home. Surfacing effluent saturated the backyard, affecting the safe areas the homeowner’s children and chickens were able to use. A site investigation showed that effluent was rising above the outlet in the septic tank, and that the lateral field had failed. There was limited space to build a replacement system. The design would also have to consider that the large family had homeschooled children, so water would be heavily and steadily used throughout the day.

Solution: Cat Cans Portable Services designed the repair system for the three-bedroom home. An Eljen GSF system using A42 modules was chosen for the site, as it would fit in the limited available space. The system has a 0.5 gpd/square-foot loading rate, and is an in-ground bed using six laterals with a distribution box in the center with speed levelers for equal distribution. Twenty-four A42 modules were used for the system, placed on top of 1 foot of ASTM C-33 sand.

Result: The homeowner now has a code-compliant system, and a safe place for his family and animals. Eljen donated the A42 modules as part of their commitment to veterans, reducing the financial strain for the homeowner. 800-444-1359; www.eljen.com

Package treatment plant replaces longtime unit at community park

Problem: Pelican Park in Mandeville, Louisiana, is a 550-acre community park with 32 athletic fields, two gyms and a 46,000-square-foot multipurpose community center. The community park also includes an 18-hole disc golf course and parking for more than 1,700 vehicles. Nearly 35 years ago, the community installed a 3,000 gpd Delta Package Sewage Treatment Plant to serve park operations. With the tank nearing the end of its expected life cycle due to rust resulting from outdated prep and coating methods unlike what is available today, park staff needed a replacement system.

Solution: Because the park was happy with the existing system and its longevity, they contracted Infiltrator to fabricate a new ENVIRO-AIRE Extended Aeration Package Plant replacement system that would be easy for the team to transition to due to familiarity with the previous model. The plants are custom designed for the sewage treatment needs of each location and are suitable for permanent or temporary use in areas beyond the reach of municipal wastewater systems. Each plant is custom-built at the factory and shipped to the project site as a self-contained unit that requires minimal assembly.

Result: The new system at Pelican Park effectively handles the more than 12,000 park visitors each Saturday and 1 million visitors per year. The system installation and startup went smoothly and the system is operating as expected. 800-221-4436; www.infiltratorwater.com
