Want to further endear yourself to customers and secure their loyalty? Take a page out of the Birdsongs' book. Literally.
Jason and Erin Birdsong linked up with a friend at the 2023 WWETT Show who asked some revealing questions that got them thinking about the bigger picture for themselves and their septic and portable sanitation business, JT Services, located in Claremore, Oklahoma. The friend also connected them with a coach/mentor, Mike Agugliaro of the FuDog Group, who continues to do video calls with Jason Birdsong twice a week.
In January 2025, Agugliaro invited 15 guests, including Birdsong, to a live event at his facility in New Jersey to talk about how to write a book. “He’s written over 30 books and developed a process which made it, not easy, but manageable,” Birdsong says. “I was full of anxiety. I don’t even like to read and now I’m writing a book. I had a lot of limiting beliefs about myself — am I smart enough, will people read it? But it has been welcomed and I’ve gotten great feedback.”
After four days, he had a 72-page book written. It took another week to get the artwork for the cover done, and another week to publish it. The book, Ultimate Homeowners Guide, provides help for homeowners who hire service companies, whether it’s septic, plumbing, HVAC or electric work. The guide includes topics such as how to find reliable services, avoid costly mistakes, identify scams and structure agreements.
Birdsong offers a free digital download on the company’s website. The book is also listed on Amazon. “It’s been endorsed by Kevin Harrington, one of the original sharks on the TV show Shark Tank,” Birdsong says.
In addition to educating homeowners, Birdsong believes the book gives him credibility and authority in the industry. He has been asked to teach at industry conferences for the WWETT Show, PSAI and the NOWRA Mega-Conference.
“You’ve heard the saying, ‘Knowledge is power.’ Knowledge is no longer power. Everybody has access to knowledge — Google, ChatGPT. The people who think knowledge is power are going to get left behind. As a business owner you have to create authority to prove you have the wisdom the other guy doesn’t.”
Birdsong is planning to write a second book talking about his journey to success.
